Make a difference to learners in your local community

Further Education (FE) colleges play a vital role in equipping people with the skills that keep our communities running – from electricians and care workers to chefs and lab technicians. Across England, 218 colleges support 1.6 million students each year, helping them gain practical knowledge and experience. They offer a fresh start for adults looking to retrain, a launchpad for apprentices beginning their careers, and a practical pathway for learners of all ages.

As an FE college governor, you’ll help shape that journey. You’ll be part of the board that sets the college’s strategic direction, holds leaders to account, and ensures public funds are used effectively.

What makes a great FE governor?

Colleges welcome governors from diverse professional and personal backgrounds. Strategic thinking, good judgement, and a willingness to learn are key attributes. Experience in areas such as finance, law, HR, education, estates, or digital strategy can be especially valuable. While you don’t need to have worked in education to become an FE college governor, experience and knowledge of the sector is beneficial.

What matters most is bringing a fresh perspective, asking the right questions, and helping ensure decisions are made in the best interests of learners. Colleges provide induction and training and DfE-funded professional development is also available to support new governors in understanding the FE landscape.
