Governing boards need effective leaders to deliver robust governance and drive school improvement. Yet finding someone with the right skills and experience to chair a board of governors can be time-consuming and resource-heavy.
Our Chair Recruitment Service takes a proven, proactive approach – sourcing skilled volunteers to meet the needs of boards across England. For such an important role, you can rely on our experienced recruiters to find the right person to lead your board and strengthen governance in your school. You won’t pay anything until a volunteer has been appointed.
Find your next chairHow does the Chair Recruitment Service work?
- A member of our dedicated recruitment team will conduct a ‘discovery call’ with you to understand your needs.
- We will conduct pro-active outreach and head-hunting to identify volunteers with suitable experience and interest in becoming a chair. To reflect this improvement in our service and ensure the charity is sustainable, there will now be a charge in place for the recruitment of chairs of governors.
- We will provide volunteers with training to improve their knowledge of governance and enhance their chairing abilities.
- We are delighted to be working with IGovS, a support service formed by leading governance professionals. IGovS will provide placed volunteers with chair-specific training, as well as mentoring for the first four months of their placement. This enhanced support will enable new chairs to learn from other professionals and develop their leadership skills, benefiting the whole board.

- If you’re ready to take the next step in your governance journey, we’ll fully support you. When you’re appointed as a chair of governors through our service, you’ll receive training and mentoring from our experienced partner, IGovS.
- Whether you’re new to school governance or looking to take the next step, Governors for Schools will provide a package of support to help you thrive as a chair. Additionally, this package includes school governor induction eLearning to increase your governance knowledge, as well as bespoke training in being a chair.
