As part of our Inclusive Governance campaign, we asked a range of school governors to provide diary entries detailing their experiences in the role. As well as gaining first-hand insight into people’s diverse governance journeys, we explore how boards are addressing issues surrounding diversity and inclusion.

We end our Diary of a School Governor series with young governor, Anand Aggarwal – who was recently elected as a Chair of Governors and acts as Clerk to a Local Governing Board. In this entry, he explores how governance has prepared him for a career in education.

In his second entry, Colin Ngan talked about his experience undertaking an INSET day with a focus on ‘Inclusion and Racial Literacy’ and how it’s important for governors to be aware of the power that microaggressions have.

[Webinar] How can governors support LGBTQ+ inclusion in schools? Why should you get involved?

In this panel discussion and Q&A, Governors for Schools and Just Like Us will explore how governance volunteers can support LGBTQ+ inclusion within their schools. The session will feature a Just Like Us ambassador speaking about their own experiences both within school and as an ambassador.

The session will also focus on the importance of LGBTQ+ representation within school governance boards and structures, and how you can get involved and help build schools that are inclusive for all.

First up is Colin Ngan. Colin took up his school governance role in 2017 and was subsequently co-opted by the board. He currently chairs and sits on several different committees as part of a primary school governing board.
