School Governor Vacancy Information

School: Penair School

Trust: Penair School

Role type: Chair

About the vacancy:
Penair School is looking for a committed volunteer to join their board.

The school is situated in Truro and is in direct competition with another school on the other side of the town. The school received two consecutive OFSTED inspections graded ‘requires improvement’ coupled with falls in standards which resulted in falling rolls from 1200 students in 2013 to a low of 873 in 2017. Since an improved OFSTED rating in April 2017 and again in March 2023 to ‘Good’, the school has built on this success improving every aspect of the experience for students at Penair. This has subsequently resulted in much higher recruitment with the school now having 1239 students on roll in March 2025. In addition, the school runs and funds its own bus service bringing in over 250 students from the North Coast who are outside our catchment area and this is due, in part, to parental demand/preference. The school was approached by the Local Authority to expand and increase its PAN to 270 for Year 7 intakes with a new 10 classroom block built Autumn 2022. The school has a strong governing body that have been stable for a number of years and have recently seen two new governors join the board. The Headteacher has been in post since 2015. The Leadership team has a mix of Leaders that have been long established at the school and 3 new members September 2025 that have brought fresh ideas to the existing team. For 2024 results the progress 8 figure is 0.05 which places Penair the 10th best school in Cornwall (the national average is -0.03). Penair was also the highest performing school in Cornwall for grades 5+ in both English and maths and 5th for Attainment 8 and top 10 for EBacc average point score.

Being a school governor is a commitment and a responsibility, but it’s also a rewarding position. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to improve education for children locally and see the impact of your decisions.
